New statewide poll finds strong support for hydroelectric dam sale to Confluence Hydro

Respondents who live near dams worry about losing valuable resource if dams are decommissioned

EAST LANSING, Mich. – A new statewide survey shows strong support among respondents for Consumers Energy’s sale of 13 hydroelectric dams to clean energy leader Confluence Hydro.

The survey of 600 Michigan voters by GQR, a premier polling firm based in Washington, D.C., found that 63% of Michigan voters support the sale of the dams. That support increases to 67% for voters living in counties with a dam.

“As rising gas prices strain family budgets, Michiganders want to preserve dams that provide clean, renewable energy, deliver environmental benefits, support local communities and create opportunities for recreation,” said John Barry, senior associate at GQR. “At a time when many issues are polarized along partisan and demographic lines, the dam sale between Consumers Energy and Confluence Hydro stands out for its broad support.”

The survey, conducted May 23-28, also found that respondents deeply value the preservation of the state’s river dams, with nearly 60% of those who responded to the survey saying they have a favorable view of the dams.

Respondents also showed strong support for hydroelectric energy with 77% saying it is their preferred energy source, outpacing support for natural gas, solar, coal and wind.

GQR conducted the survey through phone calls and texts to 600 registered voters in Michigan, with an additional oversample of 200 registered voters in nine counties with river dams including Alcona, Allegan, Ionia, Iosco, Manistee, Mecosta, Newaygo, Oscoda and Wexford.

A memo outlining the survey results can be found online.
